What are Typical Interior Design Fees in Toronto/Aurora in 2025

Are you looking to transform your living space into a stylish haven? Whether you reside in a spacious house or a cozy condo, achieving a cohesive and unique look can be challenging. That’s where the expertise of an interior decorator comes in. But, you may be wondering, what are the fees for interior design services? If so, you are not alone.

One of the first questions homeowners ask me is my fees for interior design services. As an Aurora-based interior decorator, I provide cost-effective solutions and services compared to Toronto or Aurora, Ontario designers with rented studios. Operating from home allows me to offer top-notch services without expensive overheads. So, I pass on the savings to you. In this post, I’ll delve into the average costs of these services and shed light on the pricing of my services. I will also explain why the fees are the way they are. Stick around for some valuable insights! Before I talk about pricing I will talk about a bit about what interior decorators do so the fees make more sense.

The role of interior decorators is to do the following:

  • The role of interior decorators is to do the following:
  • Create computer renderings or drawings of your space, like furniture plans. It will help you visualize where your furniture is place.
  • Provide mood boards. They show you how your new and existing furniture, accessories, and materials, such as flooring, work together.
  • Find, buy, and arrange for the delivery of your furnishings.
  • Manage contractors, electricians, plumbers, etc., for your renovation.

What Does an Interior Design Consultant Do?

Interior design focuses on creating spaces that are both functional and attractive. To bring your rooms to life, interior decorators craft a design concept or plan for your space. A key part of this concept is to create mood or presentation boards. They provide a glimpse of how new and existing furnishings will transform your space. And help you see if the furnishings coordinate well together.

Another key part of the design plan is the layout. Furniture plans show how to arrange the furniture and other elements in your space. At Lynteriors, we create layouts (floor plans) and boards to help you visualize your new space. But, we need a consultation to gather the information. The information helps us design your space and create a floor plan and mood board. So, what is the fee for an interior design consultation? Keep reading to find out!

Interior Design Consultation Fees.

Interior design processes, including mine, typically begin with a consultation. In Toronto or Aurora, the average consultation fee ranges from $150 to $500. I charge $100 for a one-hour consultation and $200 for 2 hours if you need measurements for floor plans or it is a large project. My home studio has lower costs than larger firms. So, I can offer more competitive prices.

Why do I charge for the consultation? During our two-hour session, I offer valuable tips. Plus, you receive personalized and tailored recommendations for your design project. Also, it lets me create a design plan for your space. This is the next step in the interior design process. Read on to find out what the design concept fees are and why.

List of key factors that influence design plan fees

Both redecorating and renovation projects need a design concept or design plan. Good design takes time, and the time needed depends on the project requirements. Many fee structures exist. But, costs depend on the hours the designer spends on your design plan.

Several factors that determine the design fee:

  • The number of rooms involved, whether one bedroom or the entire house.
  • Amount of design work required.
  • The square footage (size) of each room involved.
  • The extent of construction involved, such as a bathroom renovation with new cabinets.

Fees Depend on the Number of Rooms

Design plan costs vary based on the amount of design work required and the number of rooms involved. For instance, the fee will be higher if you want to renovate or redecorate many rooms in your home. Because Lynteriors needs to create more mood boards. Each room will need its own presentation board. To learn more about presentation boards click the following link. https://lynteriors.wordpress.com/2024/09/26/what-is-an-interior-design-presentation-mood-board/

According to Homeguide, interior designers in Aurora charge flat-rate design fees between $500 and $2,000 per room. We use a flat-rate design fee structure for the design concept portion of the project too. Lynteriors determines the flat rate by the many hours we expect to spend on your project’s design plan. The concept design or design plan for your room typically includes a presentation board, a furniture layout plan, and sometimes a perspective drawing. The price will be lower if only one of these design elements is needed.

Fees Depend on the Room Size too

Room size also influences the price. At Lynteriors, the cost ranges from $300-400 for a presentation board. A mood board is all you may need if you are restyling a room with accent pieces such as pillows and wall art and no new furniture. Smaller rooms cost less due to the less time needed for creating the board and for sourcing or finding the accessories. Mood boards may also be used if you are procuring furniture with us so you can see how everything purchased and item already in the room will look.

For instance, sourcing accessories for a small child’s bedroom takes less time compared to a master bedroom with a sitting area and an ensuite. This is because a child’s room has fewer accessories to find, place on the presentation board, coordinate with other items, and decide whether to keep or reject it.

A furniture plan costs $350-400. For instance furniture plans for a bedroom would be at the lower end. On the other hand, kitchens are complex with cabinets etc. that take time to draw. So, kitchen floor plans would cost more to render.

Furniture plans are beneficial if you want to check the spatial fit. For example, the Muskoka bunkie owners wanted to ensure there was space for a sitting area so they asked me to create a furniture plan for them. The bunkie project pictured above started with a floor plan which is also pictured above. At first, the owners aimed for a family-friendly guest suite with beds for the parents and children . Later, they decided to make it a guest suite and Airbnb for couples. Despite this, my suggested queen bed and seating plan stayed.

Costs Increase if Extra Design Drawings are Needed

If you want to purchase new furniture, the design plan cost begins at $650. In this case, the design plan requires a floor plan and a presentation board. It takes time to create these visuals. Also, sourcing new furniture for you takes time. And it takes time to email and phone you during the design phase.

Most people struggle to imagine new furniture in their space. So, I create floor plans, mood boards, and sometimes perspective drawings. Perspective drawings take longer to produce than mood boards and floor plans. So, I charge a bit extra for them, ranging from $400 to $500.

The photos below show the Muskoka bunkie. The perspective drawing or the 3D model does not have the exact furniture you may purchase in the end, but it shows you how similar furniture looks in your space. For example, this project shows how similar furniture looks in the owner’s sitting area and with the queen bed. Perspective drawings give you peace of mind since they illustrate how everything will look together.

If you need all three design elements, the cost would start at $1,150. A benefit of this fee structure is that it shows you the total design cost from the start.

Fees for Renovations

The price of a project isn’t just about its size. It also takes into account the complexity of the work involved. Renovating your space raises costs when you need us to manage your project. Designers often charge a management fee when your project involves us working with a general contractor.

Some interior designers charge $50 to $500 an hour for managing renovation projects. I charge $100/h for project management. I use this fee structure for a few reasons. First, complex renovations require time for communication with contractors and tradespeople. Second, coordinating these individuals and conducting site visits takes time. And how much time it takes varies from project to project.

Summary of Fees for Interior Decorator In Aurora

As the table below shows, I charge less for my consultation, design fees and management fees than most Aurora, Ontario decorators. Because my studio is in my home I have less overhead. As a result, I pass on the savings to you.

If you need to purchase new furniture from us for your redecorating project, it starts at $600 since a presentation board and furniture plan would be required. Just to clarify, the design fee quoted by Homeguide below is for furniture. So it includes the presentation board and furniture plan only. The range of fees is $450 to 1500 per room, but I would charge only $700 per room.

Interior Decorators Save You Money!

Benefits of Trade Discounts

It might seem contradictory to say that hiring an interior designer will save you money, but it is not. First, our know-how ensures your project is workable. Plus, the designer’s expertise will limit the margin for error. An inexperienced DIYer could not do that. Furthermore, designers can also leverage their industry-related connections.

Interior designers can get you a discount from vendors that may not be available otherwise. Some interior designers share this perk with their clients.

we do things a bit different…

We share this perk with you. When you work with Lynteriors, you will receive a discount when you purchase furniture, accessories or materials from us. I will split the discount with you, which means you get up to 30% off the retail cost. Since my studio is in my home, I can keep costs low and pass the savings on to you. Part of the discount ensures compensation for the time I spend buying and ensuring delivery of your furniture. Everyone wins! I get paid for my time talking to the vendors, and you save hundreds and potentially thousands of dollars.

Summary

At Lynteriors, we help you create your dream home or space. And we do so by creating a design concept or design plan. The visual communication tools we use to produce your design plan include presentation boards, furniture plans and 3D models. We develop those designs starting with your dreams and needs shared during the consultation and translate them into furniture, accessories, and, if it is a renovation project, your finishes, such as flooring.

Creating interior design plans takes time. The cost depends on the size of rooms, the number of rooms and the number of visuals required for your project. We charge a fixed fee for design plans,

Renovation projects involve an extra fee. They require discussions with contractors and coordination of trade professionals, which takes time. Many designers use an hourly fee structure for project management, including Lynteriors.

We can help you save costs. One way is that I have decreased my consultation fees. Decreasing prices helps control inflation. Furthermore, if you plan to buy furniture through us, your furniture discount can almost cover the cost of the design fee. So, in effect, you pay little or nothing for the design fee. What is an Interior Design Presentation/Mood Board?

This post will answer this question by showcasing mood boards and presentation boards created by Lynteriors for homeowners.

Fall is here, which makes it the perfect time to transform your space and start planning your interior design project. It is a great time to create a space to leave your stressful working life behind. So you can enjoy your oasis called home. You can indeed turn your home into your retreat, and Lynteriors can help!

After you decide whether to renovate your space, the next step is to consider purchasing new furnishings. At this stage of the design process, it is advisable to choose a design style you prefer for your furnishings. It would be best to choose a colour scheme for your room you. So, during the consultation, I’ll ask about your colour and furniture style preferences and a few additional questions.

With all this information I gathered during the consultation, we move into the planning phase of interior design. During this phase, Lynteriors will create a design concept or plan, which includes a presentation board. The design concept is based on the dream home you told me about during the consultation.

What is a Design Concept?

So, the design concept incorporates information I gathered from you during the consultation. It includes mood boards (also known as presentation moods). The design plan also includes floor plans and perspective drawings. Presentation boards communicate my vision for your space. I base the mood board on what you told me is your dream for your space during the consultation. Therefore, the presentation board reflects your dream home.

Why a Presentation/Mood Board is Necessary?

Presentation boards are crucial as they communicate my understanding of your vision for the space and your preferences. Mood boards enable early feedback in the design process, which is essential for preventing expensive and time-consuming changes later on. For example, as you review the presentation board, you may see that you don’t like a particular piece of furniture. You realize instead you prefer a different style. In that case, we can easily change the furniture pieces on the board. Finding a different piece of furniture at this stage is not a problem. So, presentation boards are a valuable tool for ensuring your satisfaction. That is why I include them for both my redecorating and renovating packages.

Benefits of Presentation Boards

There are several benefits to having mood boards created. They include:

  • Ensuring my vision aligns with your vision
  • Ensuring a cohesive, harmonious Design
  • Ensuring issue identification

1: Alignment with Your dream space

The presentation board ensures that my design concept harmoniously blends with your vision for your space. They ensure that we are on the same page from your project’s beginning. It is crucial that I capture your dream for your room. So, I bring your dream into reality. If you love everything on the presentation board, we know I have captured your vision. We can then move on to implementing the design concept or plan.

2. Cohesive Harmonious Design

Secondly, presentation boards pull my design ideas into one place. As a result, the boards ensure that all furnishings complement each other for an attractive look. They also allow you, as the homeowner, to see how your existing furniture looks with recommended furnishings. It helps all of us establish what works well together regarding colour preferences and style.

The boards ensure that all chosen furniture and accessories, such as wall art and table lamps, complement each other to create a unified look. The photo below is an example of a presentation board that shows furniture and table lamps side by side. The owner chose the window treatment design pictured on the mood board. She had her home restyled with the wall art and table lamps. However, she decided to keep her current furniture. The first photo in this post shows her newly redecorated living room.

3. Issue Identification:

Finally, early visualization helps identify potential design or functionality issues. It allows adjustments to be made before implementation, saving time and money. So, by involving you early in the process, Lynteriors can ensure that the final presentation meets your expectations and needs.

For example, I created an initial presentation board pictured for my recent client, who owned a Toronto condominium. As the board was being developed one the owners mentioned that a low-cost rug would be necessary. She stated this because their 11-year-old cat loved to use rugs as scratching boards. The rug needed to look attractive but also needed to be budget-friendly. So, I changed the rug I initially picked for this more budget-friendly one. It was easy to replace the rug on the presentation board. Swapping one rug for another was straightforward. You can see the replaced rug on the presentation board below.

Selection of Furnishings

When I start designing for you, I carefully select furniture and accessory pieces that align with your room’s layout, your preferred style, and your preferred colour scheme. I included images of these pieces on the board to showcase how they contribute to the overall design. You can see what I mean as I share more about my most recent interior design project below.

The Toronto condo owners wanted white and gold furnishings with a minimalist modern feel. The wife had a fondness for marble. So, I made sure I incorporated it in the design. The board I created showcases images of the table lamps. I also showcase a C table with brass and marble which has a modern feel. The board also shows how the existing sectionals and the new furniture will look together in the actual space. And, the board highlights furnishings that bring their colour scheme and furniture style preferences to life.

Conclusion

Interior design is an art form that expertly blends functionality and aesthetics to craft visually appealing yet practical spaces. An essential element of this process involves harnessing the power of presentation boards to bring the design concept to life. As a result, presentation boards are a crucial tool in interior design.

Presentation boards are a tangible representation of the proposed design, providing invaluable help visualizing the result. An interior design presentation board showcases the proposed furnishings for a specific space. Therefore, the presentation board and floor plan bridges the gap between the concept and reality

One of the presentation board benefits is ensuring my design translates your dream for your space. After all, we are trying to help you create your dream space. The presentation board is a tool for everyone to see if my interpretation of your dream space is accurate.

Secondly, it ensures every element, from colour schemes to furniture picked, works harmoniously together. For example, the ivory rug and tables, charcoal sectionals, and brass and marble items reflect the Toronto couple’s tastes. All these pieces work together, too!

Finally, it ensures the identification and discarding of furnishings not aligned with the consultation brief or the client’s vision during the consultation. It prevents potentially costly missteps in the design process. For example, the condominium owner’s cat loved to use the living room rug as a scratch pad. So, on the board, Lynteriors replaced the rug with a more budget-friendly one.

Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White:

Summer is the perfect time to envision and plan your upcoming fall interior decorating project. Nothing revitalizes and modernizes a room like a fresh coat of paint on the walls. White is a popular colour for walls because it creates an excellent canvas for all your furnishings. With a choice of whites, opt for shades with a warm undertone for an east-facing room to create the ideal ambiance. Click the following link to find out more about east-facing rooms and why warm whites work best in these rooms. https://lynteriors.wordpress.com/2024/04/30/how-to-choose-white-interior-paint-colours/.

What Colour is Cloud White?

“Cloud White” by Benjamin Moore is a warm white shade, as its name suggests, that perfectly captures a sophisticated and airy feeling. It falls in between whites that are excessively warm with more yellow tones and whites that are more crisp and clean. It has a bright and complex warmth that evokes the image of a white cloud on a sunlit day. The softened hue can infuse your interiors with elegance and create a light and airy effect without appearing stark. It is ideal for modern and traditional homes, making it suitable for any space.

We chose Cloud White for our great room because it’s a versatile white that works well with modern and traditional home decor. Additionally, it provides a nice contrast against our dark wood floors and looks good in our east-facing room, with plenty of natural light coming in through the three windows. It has brought our room, which you can see in the photo above, to life in the mornings. This simple update has made a big difference without the need for expensive renovations.

Is Cloud White, White or a Cream Colour?

This colour can be confusing, as it may appear white, cream, or both! Cloud White is a warm white paint colour that works well in rooms with high ceilings. For instance, our family room, with high ceilings, wooden floors, and Cloud White walls, appears warm, light and airy. Plus, its subtle yellow undertones add a sense of coziness to a room, especially in spaces that might otherwise feel cold with a stark white, like our room with high ceilings. The photo of our great room above showcases what cloud white looks like in our room with a high ceiling. It looks like a warm white, not a cream colour. It looks like a white colour because of the lighting, though.

In particular lighting, such as in a south-facing room and when placed next to colours such as blue, its complement, Cloud White, can take on a creamy appearance. Against blue, the creamy yellow undertone becomes obvious. But on our wall, it looks white. It looks white because of the east-facing light streaming into our room in the mornings. Read on to find out what I mean.

Cloud White and East-Facing Windows

If you have east-facing windows and receive no direct sunlight in the afternoon but get sunlight instead in the morning, you may notice that Cloud White balances out the cooler, flatter afternoon light. It is what I noticed Cloud White did in our great room. Cloud white has a warm undertone, so it appears as a warm white throughout the day but never seems creamy.

Sometimes, even warm white can look a little gray in the afternoon due to the lack of direct sunlight from the east-facing windows. Using warmer light bulbs in the afternoon and evening helps to give it a warm white look and removes the bit of gray shade.

Conclusion

It’s amazing how a fresh paint job can breathe new life into a space! But, before choosing the colour, consider how lighting affects colour appearance, especially with white paint. Natural and artificial light can significantly alter the way paint colours are perceived.

Secondly, hidden colour palettes known as undertones in the paint can peek through depending on where your window faces. For example, Cloud white is a warm white with a yellow undertone. So, in a room facing east, Cloud White looks like white, as in the photo above.

At Lynteriors, we can help you select white paint colours for your renovation project. Revitalize your space today by contacting us and discovering how the right white paint colour can transform your surroundings! Contact us at 416 721 6217.

Interior Design for a Bedroom

The finished guest suite bunkie in Muskoka. It looks very similar to the perspective drawing. The furniture was place in the bunkie exactly how it was designed in the 3D drawing

Muskoka Bunkie Guest Suite

You may be planning to embark on your interior decorating project soon! But, you may not be aware that there are several steps to your interior design process, and creating drawings is one of them. At Lynteriors, we assist you whether you need floor plans, 3D drawings, or both to ensure your interior design vision is achievable. Interior design drawings are precious, and I’ll explain why in the following text.

For example, picture being able to visualize how furniture, wall colours, and floor finishes harmonize in your new home or cottage space. It’s achievable with the use of drawings. I utilize software designed to help you envision and comprehend how your ideal space will look. These drawings also demonstrate what will work and what won’t, providing a sneak peek into the appearance of your final product. It is valuable as it reduces unexpected negative surprises. The owners of a lake house in Muskoka had an unfinished space above their garage. They had a vision for the space and wanted to assess its viability. In 2021, they requested a floor plan, or rather, a computer-generated design from Lynteriors.

This project was fun because the space was unfinished. The photo below shows the unfinished guest bunkie above the garage. I love to help homeowners create their dream space. The first thing we did to get the project going was to book a consultation. After all, the first interior design phase of any design project is a consultation with your interior designer.

The unfinished bunkie above the garage in a Muskoka lake house.

The Consultation Phase

During the consultation, I took measurements to help the owners determine if their ideas for the space were feasible. Initially, they were considering creating a guest suite for friends with children. They were contemplating using bunk beds and a Murphy bed. And they wanted a sitting area in the space. Here is where elevation drawings or 3D drawings come in handy. They allow the homeowner and the designer to visualize whether these beds and a sitting area fit in the space.

Why the Concept Design Phase is Important:

The next phase of the design process is creating a concept design which includes drawings. So, I rendered a perspective drawing to check if the room could accommodate a Murphy bed or bunk bed. It quickly became clear that the walls were not tall enough for either bed. Some walls were less than five feet tall since the space was constructed in the garage attic. It meant a pull-down Murphy bed wouldn’t work because the walls weren’t tall enough to accommodate it. Placing a bunk bed in the middle of the room was also not ideal.

The perspective drawing clearly showed the low wall heights. Perspective drawings aid in visualizing furniture placement and prevent costly mistakes when purchasing. In this case, it saved the homeowners money by preventing them from buying a Murphy bed that wouldn’t have fit. Instead, the perspective drawing below reveals the room could accommodate a queen bed, a twin bed (but just barely) and a sitting area.

3D or perspective drawings showing how the guest bunkie will look.

Why Interior Design Projects Take Time

After completing the drawings, the homeowners changed their plans for the room. Instead of using it for guests with families, they decided to add a dining area and turn it into a guest suite for two. They also planned to use it as an Airbnb. They completed the rest of the project on their own. It took a while for the Lake of Bays township to approve their plan since they needed to add an outside fire safety staircase for the bunkie. Projects in Muskoka can take a long time to complete.

I recently asked them for a client review, and they kindly provided the following Google review. You can click the button below to see the original testimonial.

It was a very pleasant experience dealing with Lynn, designing a guest suite above the garage. She came and took multiple measurements and with the help of her computer came up with a design that works for us and looks awesome.

Concept Design and Furniture Plan

They needed a furniture plan to make purchasing decisions and arrange items attractively. I created a computer-aided furniture plan to determine how many beds would fit in the space and whether a sitting area would also fit. The photo shows a queen bed, a twin bed, and a sitting area. The floor plan indicates that the sitting area with two armchairs would fit. It also shows that a twin bed and queen bed fit too. However, the floor plan did not show the not-so-tall walls. That is where elevation or perspective drawings (3D) like the one above come in handy.

Furniture plan showing where to place the guest suite furniture.

Wrap-Up

It took about three years to complete their project, but many of the owner’s friends and family guests have already enjoyed the space. Unfinished spaces often take time to transform into your dream space, especially if you are in Muskoka.

The homeowners of this lake house bunkie wanted a floor plan to ensure their dream for the space was feasible which was to make in a guest suite with a sitting area. The furniture plan clearly showed what furniture would work and where to place it. Furniture plans and other drawings are invaluable. At Lynteriors, we can help you with part or all of your renovation projects, including providing you with concept design drawings, as we did for the owners of this lovely lake house bunkie. Lynteriors can help you with your project too. So, contact us today!

Designer by Your Side

Do you need help decorating an area of your home but want to do it yourself? Perhaps you need advise as to how to style your bookshelves. As you can see from the photo below we can help you with that. Do-it-yourself consultations are budget-friendly and allow you to get interior design advice or help. It can be a collaborative in-home design session in which we plan, design or shop for furnishings for your space. Lynteriors can help you in many other ways too. For example we can help you pick light fixtures that tie all your rooms together if you have an open-concept space.

Styled shelf with blue and white accessories.
Styled Shelf in Breakfast Room

So, I can shop with you to advise you and to help you pick furnishings such as lighting, throw pillows and so on that you prefer. For example, I helped a Newmarket homeowner pick a ceiling fixture for her entryway. I gathered information during the consultation to find out about her preferences and so on. I sat beside her while we were on her computer, to help her pick out a light fixture she loved that would tie all her open-concept public rooms together. The photo of the light fixture and her testimonial is at the end of this page. She even received a discount on her light fixture because she bought it through me! It worked because her ceiling fixture was black. Selecting items online can be challenging, as the colours may not always be accurately represented. I recommend visiting a showroom to view the items in person. If visiting a showroom is impossible, it’s best to opt for solid black items when shopping online since black appears consistent under all lighting conditions.
