Renovating Your Kitchen in Stages: Part Two

Are you thinking about renovating your kitchen? If budget constraints are a concern, consider a kitchen renovation done in stages— a wise approach that allows you to spread costs over time. For retirees or anyone on a fixed income etc. , taking on a kitchen makeover in manageable phases can turn your dream kitchen into a reality without overwhelming your finances.

Furthermore, a phased renovation could be the best option for your budget and quality of life if you want to avoid interruptions during the renovation process. Since a complete renovation can take between 6 and 12 weeks, you might want to consider a phased approach to prevent living with an unusable kitchen for up to 3 months.

Christmas Gift: A Renovated Kitchen!

We have chosen to renovate our cottage kitchen in stages, and I’m thrilled that my countertop update will be finished by Christmas — what a perfect holiday gift! Keep reading to find out all the details. A renovated kitchen can also be a wonderful gift for someone you love!

Our Kitchen Countertop Renovation

We are considering a cottage kitchen extension in the future, so we have decided to limit our spending on our current Muskoka kitchen renovation. As a result, we opted for a DIY renovation. Furthermore, by managing the project ourselves, we can ensure the kitchen remains usable. This approach works well for us since we only visit the cottage occasionally.

Cottage Kitchen Countertop Tip

This year, we decided to start part two of our renovation, which involved replacing our countertops. Initially, we considered replacing our worn and damaged kitchen counter with a white quartz countertop. However, my husband, Steve, suggested opting for wood countertops instead. Since it’s a cottage, wood would be an excellent material to enhance that cottage feel, so I agreed with his idea.

He suggested that we hire a company to produce the countertops, and then we could finish them with chamfered edges. He mentioned that he could handle the chamfering and sealing. I proposed using light-coloured wood to brighten our east-facing kitchen, and he agreed. For my birthday, he ordered the countertops. They arrived in three pieces. We sealed them with food-grade sealants to protect against spills. Recently, we replaced the longer piece of the dark green countertop with the new maple countertop. You can see the before and after photos below.

Kitchen Countertop Edging Tip

As you can see from the photo, Steve created what is known as an eased edge. Eased edges are an excellent choice for small kitchens, tight corners, and narrow walkways. It was perfect for our small kitchen. These edges feature slightly rounded corners for added safety and comfort but maintain flat, unobtrusive sides. They are a popular and cost-effective option for both modern and traditional kitchens. They complement any countertop material, and their rounded design helps prevent chipping if something or someone bumps into it. And if you chamfer them yourselves, you save even more money!

Sinks and to the Trade Discounts

We recently selected a stunning new sink from Kohler, taking advantage of a special discount thanks to my status as an interior decorator. This opportunity enabled us to invest in a reputable brand at a price that rivals lesser-quality options from, for example, Home Depot. Remember, when you choose to work with me, you benefit from exclusive discounts of up to 30% on furniture, fixtures, materials, etc. Don’t miss out on these fantastic savings!
